{{This is something I wrote at the end of 08}}
I was thinking about this topic while in church the last Sunday of the year. Many of us, including myself have tried and still do try to find pleasure in the “things” that we have come to trust in and put our hope and faith in to make us feel better and bring us comfort. I can’t stress it enough that I am no different than anyone else. I am no different than any other teenager. The only thing that MAY separate me from many, but certainly not ALL of my peers, is that the Lord Jesus Christ has excepted me back and He is constantly forgiving me and working on me and I now know the truth and have the responsibility to Him to bring souls to Him.
So as I was thinking about this topic, and as I am writing this now, I am feeling convicted for things I have done and things I have gone back to.
One thing I have heard before and completely agree with is the fact that you have to be strong to be a follower of Christ. It’s easy to say that you believe in the story of Jesus, but it’s hard when you have to live your life according to the Word. Weak minded believers like to use the parts of the bible that fit them and they use to Word to make them feel good about their lives. Everything that is in the bible is in there for a reason. We are not suppose to take the words in it out of context, add to it or take away from it. You can’t be weak in this thing because you have to be pruned and torn away from the very things that you love: money, clothes, lust, cars, and more and more of pleasing you AKA sin. It hurts to be torn from things that you care about. Can you imagine, being torn from your family that you love deeply. Can you imagine the hurt a child must feel when they are torn away from their siblings because they are in the system and a couple only wants one of them? Take that pain and times it by a million when you find yourself being torn from the things your heart longs for. And then times that pain by a billion when you know in your heart that it’s wrong, but you backslide and do it again. (Trust, it doesn’t feel good). Even though all of this hurts, it’s for our own good and God wants only the best for His children. You know how your parents always say “I know what’s best for you”? Well, God is ALL of our Father and he created everything, so He DEFINITELY knows what’s best (and what’s worst) for us. Now think on one more thing before I dig in: times the pain of leaving what you love (because it’s the deciding factor of life or death) by infinity if you don’t give it up… and your pleasure leads you to hell? Its deep brah.
Now: pleasures. One of the definitions of pleasure, according to dictionary.com is: enjoyment or satisfaction derived from what is to one's liking; gratification; delight. Worldly pleasures will eventually turn into idols if you love them too much, things we think can please us more than God can. And idolatry is a sin. Its one of the things that God hates so much and it will lead you to the second death. It is one of the qualities that God guarantees will lead you to Hell.
First thing I would like to address is:
• FLESH
o The flesh is what makes us desire our worldly pleasures. What ever will give us the most pleasure at that time is what our “flesh” is craving. That’s why the Bible says we have to die to our worldly desires. It’s not an easy process, nor can it be done in a matter of days. The Bible says we have to die DAILY. Sanctification is a life long process….and times running out. The flesh is directed by the devil and the Spirit is completely opposed to the flesh. The Bible gives us a list of things that let us know whether we are walking by the flesh or by the Spirit. A few characteristics of walking by the flesh are fighting, jealousy, drunkenness, and impurity. A few fruits of the Spirit are peace, kindness, gentleness and self-control. See the difference???
So what are some things that qualify as a pleasure? In this day and time?
• MONEY
o The love for this thing is the root of all evil. It will lead you down a road of destruction. We’ve all seen it before. Artist, actors, talk-show host, models, even regular people on the street we see everyday. Anyone who is not grounded in Christ will seek to find comfort and pleasure in THINGS. Things that will lose their value in a short time and will soon be replaced.
o Money makes people do strange things. It makes people give up their families, their friends, and their soul even, to chase after it. Just think of the position we would be in if we chased God the way we chase money! We would be in great shape to be with the King!
o Someone who loves money will never be satisfied with it because you will always want more. You are never satisfied.
• SEX
o Aw, man. I done got your attention with this one, huh? Yeah I know. Okay, so the world, and all that it uses to be a medium, says that we need to be doing this thing right? I mean, it’s everywhere! Sexual immorality and sexual identity is all we see. We can’t even watch a cartoon anymore without having a hint of sex and lust lurking somewhere within the full 25 minutes the program is on. Many people say that it’s okay to do it without being married, as long as you’re “in love”. We have been completely corrupted to this topic and standard. My mom tells me stories that she knows and ones my grandmothers know from living in a time where if you weren’t married and you got pregnant, they would send you away. It was shameful and unheard of. Now it seems like it’s on the list of things we must do before the day is out, kinda like eating and bathing.
o We CLEARLY are not supposed to have sex until we are married because that was the original design of God with the first couple. Marriage is one man, one woman, legally married in His sight. If one of these things is out of order, the whole thing is which then makes it qualify as sexual immorality, which is a guarantee to Hell.
o It is better to marry than to burn with passion. Meaning it is good to not marry, but if you can't control your need and desire to engage in sex, then get married so you can be happy and not sin at the same time.
o If we all followed the original plan, there would be no step-this and step-that, half-this and half-that, no diseases, no cheating, nothing!
• THINGS
o Houses, cars, jewelry, the new J’s, gators, clothes, phones, man-made things. There is nothing wrong with wanting nice things. The problem is when we want things to the point where we are never satisfied, by wanting more or better and it begins to consume us and our heart. That is a trap. Traps set you up and failure is right around the corner. There is a story in the bible about a rich man who waned to know how to get into heaven. The Lord told him what he had to do, and the last thing He said was sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor. The rich man went away sad because he didn’t want to do it. He was attached to the things he owned (idols). To illustrate the story even more, it goes on to say that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to get to heaven.
o We should be content if we only have food and clothing, the Bible says. When we die, what will go with us? Nothing! When we were born, what did we have with us??? Nothing! Things don’t last forever and our attention is always turned to the next big thing. Once the new J’s come out, nobody is even thinking about the ones that came out 2 weeks prior, right???
• LUST
o What we be thinking love is when the lights is down. What we be thinking when we see them shoes in the display and gotta have them, then see some different shoes the next week in the display and want them more. What we be thinking when we see a car down the street and we just gotta figure a way out to get only that car. Desiring things without any true meaning or firm foundation behind why you like that thing or person or why it’s so important is lust. It means you no good and it’s so powerful, you think its real love… its deep brah.
o If you have ever heard the message of Jesus, you have the DUTY to stop lusting, because you now have knowledge of truth and lie, right and wring, good and evil. STOP! WAIT! Quit wanting everything you see. My pastor has been stressing this statement a lot lately: to always want something right now is a poverty mentality.
o Lust is most commonly linked with sex, but you can lust for other things to, as I have illustrated.
Pleasures cause you to forget yourself and do what ever needs to be done to fulfill that thing. Take someone on drugs, for example. People hooked on drugs will do any and everything they have to, to get their pleasure fulfilled. Steal, lie, cheat, whatever. They don’t care who they hurt. They don’t care what happens in the end. It’s all about the moment. That’s a terrible thing to do: live only in the moment all the time. What if God was like that? Our very LIVES are but a moment to God.
My people, we have got to get back to being HOLY children. Notice I didn’t say good children. We’re not good beings. We are born sinful. There’s only one that is good.
I’m telling y'all, y’all need to get up on the 1-1-6 clique. One of the members once said, as I said at the beginning of this, that we don’t except Christ, He accepts us back. And once He does, it would be a terrible thing to turn Him away…AGAIN.
In our sinful nature, we are far too easily pleased. Too many things give us pleasure. The only one that lasts is pleasure in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Scripture to help understand passage:
Revelations 22:18
1 Timothy 6:10
Colossians 3:5
Hebrews 13:4
Galatians 5:19
1 Corinthians 6:18
1 Corinthians 15:31
1 Corinthians7:9
Ecclesiastics 5:10
1 John 3:17
Matthew 6:19
James 4:14
1 Timothy 6:9
I pray that this ministers to someone and it changes a life and a mindset. My goal for this is to touch at least one person. If it has then I am doing my job as a saint: bring souls to Christ.
I do not expect everyone to agree with everything I say and I don’t expect everyone to agree with my religion. I know everyone has a choice of how they live life- a God-given choice. I just hope that this reaches someone who is struggling within and it brings some light. Read the scriptures provided. Research. Study. Dig in. It’s the only way. Hell is really not a game, y’all. And there’s no hope if you go there to get out. I simply can’t imagine anyone, whether I like you, don’t like you, know you or don’t, going to Hell. God doesn’t want you to go there either.
Grace and Peace, fam.
